Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) is a natural remedy commonly used to soothe coughs and throat irritation. Its inner bark contains mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats the throat, reducing inflammation and discomfort. When mixed with warm water, slippery elm forms a soothing, slippery texture that helps calm persistent coughing and ease dryness. This makes it particularly effective for dry, scratchy throats caused by colds, allergies, or excessive vocal strain.
In addition to its soothing properties, slippery elm also supports overall respiratory health. It can help thin mucus, making it easier to expel, which is beneficial for productive coughs. Many herbalists recommend slippery elm tea, lozenges, or powder mixed with honey for a gentle, natural way to manage cough symptoms. Because it is mild and typically easily tolerated, it is often used as a natural alternative to conventional cough syrups, especially for those looking for plant-based remedies.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups of high quality water
- 1 handful dried slippery elm powder
- Manuka honey to taste
Directions
- Place dried slippery elm in a fine mesh bag.
- In a large pot over the stove, add in water and bring to a boil over high heat.
- Turn off the stove, add the mesh bag to the water, cover, and let steep for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Remove the mesh bag, add in the honey, and turn stove on to medium. Heat until it reaches 300°F (you can use a candy thermometer).
- Remove from stove and pour into small cough-drop-sized candy molds. Let them cool.
